New Music Experiment

My husband recently started a new job as a graphic designer at a well-respected music school and quickly realized that he might be the only one in the entire organization that does not come from a musical background. So in his effort to not become the outcast at his new job the both of us have made it a goal to listen to one classical piece each week. Thankfully our public library has quite an extensive collection of classical music, so lack of resources can not be an excuse.
Our week 1 musical section was Mahler’s Symphony #2 in C Minor.

We choose Mahler because we had heard of him before, and this particular selection because it was preformed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra, (I’m part Hungarian). All in all we really enjoyed the piece. Plus we discovered something very interesting about it—the music from the Star Wars movies sounds suspiciously similar to this piece. Maybe that’s well known in the world of classical music, but we were surprised.
Robinson rating: 4 stars
So one week down, a lot more to go. I you were expecting any in depth analysis you’ll need to go somewhere else. Any reviews here will pretty much be “yeah I like that” or “not so much”. I know that’s not very sophisticated, but at least we’re trying.

The Robinson’s go classical! I’ll stay tuned.

I landed here because of the classical music reference. It’ll be interesting to see what you think of various pieces. “New ears” are great!
Cheers!
